Athletes Foot

Athletes Foot (Fungus)

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection of the skin, caused by fungi in the genus Trichophyton and is typically transmitted in moist areas where people walk barefoot, such as showers or bathhouses. Although the condition typically affects the feet, (the space between the fourth and fifth digits most commonly afflicted) it can spread to other areas of the body, including underneath the toenails and the groin. When it spreads, there are three different categories of infection, Toe Web, Moccasin-type, and Vesicular.
· Toe web infection usually occurs between the fourth and fifth toes. The skin becomes scaly, peels, and cracks. If there is a secondary bacteria infection, the skin break down even more.
· Moccasin-type infection starts with a little soreness on your foot. The skin on the bottom or heel of your foot can become thick and crack. The toenails can also get infected and can thicken, crumble, and even fall off.
· Vesicular infection usually begins with a sudden outbreak of large fluid-filled blisters under the skin, appearing anywhere on the foot, but mainly on the bottom. A secondary bacterial infection can occur with this type of athlete’s foot.

Main Symptoms:

· Scaling and flaking of the skin
· Itching and/or burning of the affected skin
· Blisters and cracked skin may also occur, leading to exposed raw tissue, pain, swelling, and inflammation.

Natural Help:
The fungus that causes Athletes Foot thrives in warm moist environments.
· Be sure to dry well between your toes after showering or swimming.
· Wear Sandals to allow the foot to breath.
· Wear Cotton socks to absorb excess moisture and sweat.

People get Athletes Foot by walking barefoot on contaminated surfaces near swimming pools or in locker rooms.
· Wear Sandals while in public, “wet” areas.

The Athletes Foot fungi can grow in your shoes, especially if your shoes are so tight that air cannot move around your feet.
· Consider purchasing new shoes (Buy shoes that are leather or another breathable material. Shoe materials, such as vinyl, that don't breathe cause your feet to remain moist, providing an excellent area for the fungus to breed.)
· Use *Athletes Foot Sneaker Tamer inside shoes.

  • While treating athlete's foot, dry your groin area before your feet after bathing. Also, put on your socks before your underwear. This can prevent the fungi from spreading from your feet to your groin.
  • Use hot water and bleach to increase the chance of killing fungi on your clothes and socks. Can also add 3 drops Tea Tree oil and 3 drops Lemon oil, mixed with warm water, to the Water Softener compartment or rinse water.
  • Use lamb's wool between the toes (to separate them), and/or wearing wider, roomier shoes that have not been infected by fungi can help prevent Athletes Foot. Lamb's wool is available at most pharmacies or foot care stores.
  • To help keep the feet dry, soak your feet in a drying solution of aluminum acetate (Burow's solution or Domeboro solution). Can also use diluted white vinegar soaks using 1 part vinegar and roughly 4 parts water, once or twice a day as 10-minute foot soaks may aid in treatment.
  • If the fungal infection has spread to the toenails, the nails must also be treated to avoid re-infection of the feet. Often, the nails are initially ignored only to find the athlete's foot keeps recurring.
  • Tomato-and-herb sauce. Clean your body from inside out. Take advantage of some herbs that have fungicidal properties, by creating a tomato sauce and going very heavy on the basil, celery, carrot, dill, fennel, sage and thyme. In one quick meal, you'll get a dish with dozens of fungicides: Just heat it up and pour over pasta. If you're willing to put up with the mess, you could also spread a bit of this sauce between your toes for a couple of hours.

Herbal Help:
Each of these herbal remedies should be used 2xr each day until the athletes foot is cleared up, which takes from three days to roughly one week in most cases.

Garlic (Allium sativum)
Because of the Ajoene (a compound found in garlic)Garlic is the number one herbal fungus killer.
· Rub it on with a fresh garlic clove, or use garlic powder or oil.
· Garlic footbath- Place several crushed garlic cloves in a basin with warm water and a little rubbing alcohol.
· Garlic Tincture- Crush several cloves of garlic and steep them in olive oil for one to three days. Strain out the plant material and use a cotton ball or clean cloth to apply the garlic oil between your toes once or twice a day.
· Tape a sliver of garlic between the toes of athlete's foot. Leave on for the day or at night.

Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale)
Ginger contains many anti fungal properties. Ginger ranks second among all herbs in the number of anti fungal compounds with a total of 23. That compound being caprylic acid.
· Just rub Ginger Root oil on or soak your feet in warm water that has ginger added to it.
· You can prepare a strong decoction by adding an ounce of chopped ginger root to a cup of boiling water. Simmer for 20 minutes and apply it directly to the problem areas twice a day with a cotton ball or clean cloth.

Onion (Allium cepa)
A close cousin to garlic, onion will also kill the fungus pretty easily.
· Drip Onion juice between toes and over infected areas each morning.
· Create a bathsoak, using Onion.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Although garlic has more potent fungicidal compounds, Licorice contains the largest number of anti fungal compounds. (Licorice has 25 reportedly fungicidal compounds, while Garlic has only 10, but they are quite potent.)
· Add some chopped licorice sticks to the garlic footbath mentioned above.
· Brew a strong decoction using about five to seven teaspoons of dried herb per cup of water. Bring it to a boil, simmer for 20 minutes, then let it cool. Apply the decoction directly to the affected areas using a cotton ball or clean cloth.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)
This herb contains berberine, a powerful anti fungal and antibacterial compound, which makes it an excellent antibiotic.
· Add Goldenseal tincture to juice three times a day.
· Use it externally-Make a strong decoction with the dried herb. Add five to seven teaspoons to a cup of water, bring it to a boil and let it simmer for 20 minutes. After the liquid cools to a tolerable temperature, use a cotton ball or clean cloth to apply it to the affected area, up to three times a day.

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)
This is a natural antiseptic that is high in iodine, which is known for its anti fungicidal properties.
· Simply rub the tincture or oil onto the affected areas.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon, various species)
Scientists have demonstrated significant fungicidal activity for lemongrass oil against several common infection-causing fungi.
· Drink lemongrass tea one to four times a day.
· Use the spent tea bags as compresses directly on the affected area, for additional anti fungal benefit.
· Apply 1-2 drops Lemongrass Essential oil directly onto infected areas. Dilute with carrier oil for sensitive skin.

Essential Oil Help
*Please contact a Health Care Practitioner, trained in the safety and chemical understanding of essential oils and herbs, including the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pharmaceutical drug interactions BEFORE using any suggestions on this blog.

Place any of the following Single oils or Oil mixtures between the toes and weave a Strip of Cotton Coil between the infected toes, Do not allow the cotton to become saturated with the oil. This will keep the oil on the surface of the skin longer and absorb any unwanted moisture. It will also help separate the toes, allowing air to circulate between them.

Apply 2-3 drops Lemon oil (Neat) to the effected area, in the Morning (After showering) and in the Evening (Before retiring to bed)

Can also apply Tea Tree oil (Neat) in the same way as recommended for Lemon oil.
· Use a Q-tip and massage between the toes and effected area. Make sure to work into the nail.

Create a foot soak. Soak each evening for 10-15 minutes. Blot feet Dry.
· 10 Drops Tea Tree
· 5 Drops Lemon
· ½ cup Epsom Salts
· 1 Gallon Warm water.

In extreme cases, try any of the following:
  • Apply 2 drops Thyme oil (Neat), on location. If it gets too hot, apply a carrier oil to dilute and cool the area.
  • Can also apply Oregano. Mix 3 drops Oregano oil with 1 oz. Carrier oil, Apply liberally to the affected area of the feet, 2-3 times per day, until infection is cleared up. Be sure to apply in and around toes.
  • Take 2-4 Drops Oregano, in a capsule, filled with Carrier oil, 2x daily. Any external body fungus, is also an internal problem. Be sure to clear fungus problems from inside out.*

Healthy Hair

Healthy Hair using Essential oils

The following essential oils are listed from less evasive to strongest.

  • Tea Tree can be very affective on dandruff. It is the least evasive and should be used for young children and babies.

  • Rosemary stops dandruff, and helps hair look shiny and healthy. It promotes hair growth. It is used effectively with alopecia, receding hair lines, and promoting hair regrowth.

  • Thyme is good for the scalp, helps treat dandruff and hair loss. Stops hair loss. The soothing and purifying properties make the scalp dandruff free by deep cleaning of hardened sebum, while keeping hair soft and shiny. The conditioning property of Thyme helps detangle the hair making it easier to brush and comb.

There are several ways to use the above oils. Here are some suggestions:
• Add 15-25 drops of oil of choice to a 12oz bottle of Organic, Chemical/Dye free shampoo.
• Use internally, 2-3 drops in a capsule filled with carrier oil, 2x daily.
• Use as a scalp treatment, by adding 10-12 drops to 1 ounce Olive oil, apply to scalp, wrap your head in a warm, damp towel, cover with a sheet of plastic wrapped around the towel, to maintain heat as long as possible. Keep on your head until it cools completely.
• NOTE: Be sure to keep these oils out of the eyes.

Shampoo Recipe, for hair loss/regrowth and dandruff:
• Put 12 oz Organic, Chemical/Dye free shampoo, in a blender. Add the following;
• 25 drops Peppermint
• 25 drops Lavender
• 25 drops Rosemary
• 5 drops Thyme
• Blend all together well, pour back into shampoo bottle. Wash scalp daily with “blended” shampoo.

Oregano oil can be used, if the problem is extreme. 15-20 drops of Oregano can be added to Organic, Chemical/Dye free Shampoo. Shampoo the hair and scalp thoroughly. Let the shampoo sit on the scalp for 2-3 minutes before rinsing. When rinsing, cover eyes well, and rinse thoroughly. Take 2-3 drops Oregano and carrier oil, in capsules 2x daily.

Birch oil can be used in Personal care products to support hair growth. Add 2 drops per ounce.

Lemon oil restores the function of the epidermis, helps with thinning hair and nails by balancing the sebum / oil production.

For Hair loss from Chemotherapy
• Create a warm compress, using 4 drops of Rosemary, 4 drops Lavender, and ½ ounce of Olive oil. Massage into scalp, place warm compress on head, and leave on until cold.

Perfume Essential Oil

Essential Oil Perfume/Cologne

Essential Oils have wonderful aromas and when combined can make a powerful synergy. Unlike fragrance or synthetic oils, Essential Oils offer a therapeutic advantage.

A perfumer’s standard stock consists of essential oils, but also of synthesized chemicals that mimic the constituents (natural chemicals) of essential oils and other natural ingredients. Perfumers use synthesized chemicals and chemicals extracted from essential oils, because they are often cheaper than using pure essential oils and because the chemicals are standardized and will be more consistent in their fragrance.

When creating an Essential Oil “Perfume”, you will want to be extremely careful when using any Essential Oils that might have phototoxic properties, like Bergamot. Also, avoid using all toxic or hazardous oils and all oils that are contraindicated for conditions that you have. As with any blends that you use, you must check all safety data for the oils in your blend and do a skin patch test prior to using.

After creating your Aroma Essential Oil blend, and before completing your “Perfume recipe”, allow it to sit for a 2-4 days. The constituents (natural chemicals) contained within the oils will Synergize and the aroma can change, usually rounding out a bit. Some essential oils evaporate more quickly than others. Keep in mind that as the oils in a blend evaporate, the aroma can change to reflect the aroma of the remaining oils. The alcohol or carrier oil allows the Essential Oil to stay on top of the skin longer, allowing for a longer lasting “Perfume”. Do not dilute below 20% alcohol. This will ensure that your product is preserved.

For Use of the following recipes: Shake well prior to each use and apply as you would other perfumes/colognes. It is important that you shake before each use because essential oils do not fully dissolve in alcohol. Alcohol still contains some water. The higher the proof of vodka that you use, the more alcohol concentration the vodka has. If you forget to shake prior to each use, the essential oils will not remain evenly distributed each time you spray, and you risk having applications where too high of an essential oil concentration disperses onto your skin.

Natural help for Seizures

Natural Help for Seizures/Epilepsy
A "Seizure", by definition, refers to a sudden malfunction in the brain that causes someone to collapse, convulse, or have another temporary disturbance of normal brain function, often with a loss or change in consciousness. Simply put, seizures are symptoms of a brain problem.
Seizures happen because of sudden, abnormal electrical activity in the brain or by fainting (fainting decreases blood flow to the brain). When people think of seizures, they often think of convulsions in which a person's body shakes rapidly and uncontrollably. Not all seizures cause convulsions. There are many types of seizures and some have mild symptoms. Seizures fall into two main groups. Focal seizures, also called partial seizures, happen in just one part of the brain. Generalized seizures are a result of abnormal activity on both sides of the brain.
Some seizures may be the result of another medical problem, such as low blood sugar, fever, medicines, infection, a head injury, accidental poisoning, or drug overdose. They also can be due to a brain tumor or other health problem affecting the brain. And anything that results in a sudden lack of oxygen or a reduction in blood flow to the brain can cause a seizure. In some cases, a seizure's cause is never discovered.
Most seizures last from 30 seconds to 2 minutes and do not cause lasting harm. However, it is a medical emergency if seizures last longer than 5 minutes or if a person has many seizures and does not wake up between them. Two thirds of people who experience a seizure never have another. One third go on to have recurring seizures (a condition called epilepsy.)
There are four types of epilepsy: Grand mal epilepsy, characterized by major episodes associated with loss of consciousness; Petit mal epilepsy, characterized by milder episodes, usually without loss of consciousness; Psychomotor epilepsy, characterized by different types of abnormal movements; and Autonomic epilepsy, which is associated with flushing, whiteness of skin, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, abdominal symptoms, and sweating.

Natural Help for Seizures:

  • Consider a bowel cleanse to restore healthy bowel function. Proper bowel movements two to three times a day are also important.
  • Sleep - Improvement of sleep patterns can help reduce the frequency of seizures.
  • Change Diet- Consider the Ketogenic diet.(under doctors care) -A high-fat, low carbohydrate diet can drastically cut seizures in children with severe epilepsy and could reduce the need for medication.
  • Do not eat foods with: MSG (monosodium glutamate) , aspartame, maltodextrin, glutamate, glutamic acid, anything autolyzed yeasts, yeast extract, anything hydrolized, sodium caseinate, carrageenan, barley malt, malt extracts, and anything saying natrual flavors.
  • Omega-3’s and Fresh Fish- Fish oils may be helpful by their ability to stabilize neuronal excitability in brain and heart tissue.
  • Find a source of mediation to reduce stress – Yoga, Walks, Music, Breathing exercises for relaxation and stress control, or biofeedback to slow the brain waves.
  • Reduce or eliminate any kind of supplements that have a stimulant effect such as tyrosine, ephedra, guarana, citrus aurantium, ginkgo, sexual herbs such as horny goat weed and tongkat ali, and caffeinated products (cocoa, cola, some teas, etc.)
  • Increase Magnesium and B6.- Take this through the foods you eat.
  • Be Patient - Most diet and lifestyle changes can have immediate results or take up to 6 weeks for positive results.

Essential Oil Help:
Anyone who has epilepsy should avoid the following essential oils as a precaution:
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium or Hedeoma pulegioides), Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Sage (Salvia officinalis), Savin (Juniperus sabina), Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), Thuja (Thuya occidentalis), Turpentine (Pinus species), and Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)

Frankincense is the Essential Oil of choice for any kind of brain disorder. Frankincense has a molecular makeup that includes sesquiterpenes, that is able to cross the blood/brain barrier. These sesquiterpenes stimulate the limbic system of the brain and other glands within the brain, promoting memory and releasing emotions. Frankincense slows down and deepens the breath. The therapeutic properties of Frankincense oil are antiseptic, astringent, carminative, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, sedative, tonic, uterine, vulnerary and expectorant.
To help prevent the onset of seizures:
  • Apply 1 drop Frankincense, on the bottom of each Big Toe, or at the base of the neck and temples, each night.
  • Can also place 1 drop Frankincense under the tongue, each night.
  • Can also try Lemon and Orange, 1 drop each internally or on bottoms of Big Toe- In pseudoseizure, the two brain hemispheres start to fight or don’t communicate. This will help stimulate both sides of the brain.
    • Lemon is for Left-brain function.
    • Orange is for Right-brain function.
When you feel a seizure coming on, inhale Frankincense, deeply. Basil has known to help too.

Important Note: Many Herbal Remedies can interact with seizure medicines, either diminishing seizure control or worsening side effects. Of course the effect is different depending on what kind of seizures you have and what seizure medicines you take. Always educate yourself. Search this site and other reputable sources for unbiased information about the herb, the disorder you want to treat, and all the other medicines you are taking. (One good source of information about many herbs is the website of the Integrative Medicine Service of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, found at http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/11570.cfm.) After researching, consult your doctor. When you say that you've been investigating an herbal medicine, the doctor should be willing to hear you out. If your doctor says that it's OK for you to use the herbal product alongside your regular seizure medicine, go ahead, but don't take more than the recommended dose. If you experience any new side effects, don't ignore them—call the doctor. And NEVER substitute an herbal medicine for your regular seizure medicine.

Help for Warts

Natural Wart Removal

A wart is generally a small, rough tumor, that can resemble a cauliflower or a solid blister. Warts are generally on hands and feet, but can be in other locations. Warts are common, and are caused by a viral infection, called the human papillomavirus(HPV) This viral infection can spread from one part of the body to other parts, and sometimes by contact with skin of an infected person, but not always. It is also possible to get warts from using towels or other objects used by an infected person. Human Papilloma Virus can easily penetrate the skin through cuts. At risk are people who walk barefoot or somehow get exposed to the virus. They typically disappear after a few months but can last for years and can recur. Although if left untreated, they can spread into clusters.

Essential Oil Help

Less Evasive Treatment:
  • Tea Tree oil is the least evasive and serves as an antiseptic that will prevent any possible infections that might arise. It will immediately soothe the skin and clear out the ongoing infection. It can take longer than Oregano, but is easier to work with. It may dry out the surrounding skin because of the continuous use, but will not harm it.
  • Apply 1-2 drops Tea tree oil to a cotton ball or pad and dab the wart 2x daily. The wart usually will disappear in 1-2 weeks.
Quicker, but harsher removal:
  • Use a Q-tip and apply Vaseline around the wart. Saturate a clean Q-tip in Oregano oil and place directly on top of the wart. The trick is to not get the Oregano on the surrounding skin. Place a large enough, cloth bandage to cover the wart.
  • Everyday, keep applying Oregano on top, through the bandage. Try not to get the bandage wet, but if it falls off, do it again. Remove the bandage in 3-5 days and the wart should fall off. (Repeat if necessary)
  • Use duct tape to hold bandage on, if necessary.
  • If there is an open hole, in the skin, exposed after the wart removal, apply Lavender to the hole until it heals to prevent scarring and infection.

Wart after 2 Days or Oregano application
Wart after 7 days of Oregano application

Wart after 9 days Oregano application
Wart after 11 days Oregano application

Wart after 15 days Oregano application
Wart after 20 days Oregano application.

Warning: Oregano is a “hot” oil and can cause irritation to the skin and mucous membrane; use sensibly and carefully. Avoid eyes and sensitive skin. Avoid use with children.

Lemongrass can also be used, if a fungus wart is suspected. Put a cloth bandage on top of the wart, drop 1-2 drops of Lemongrass through the bandage to keep it saturated 1-2x daily. It should fall off in about 1 week.

Internal Cleansing: If there are several warts to clear up, proceed with an internal body cleansing.

    Natural help for MS

    Natural Help with Multiple Sclerosis

What is Multiple sclerosis or MS?
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system. MS affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other. Nerve cells communicate by sending electrical signals called action potentials down long fibers called axons, which are wrapped in an insulating substance called myelin. In MS, the body's own immune system attacks and damages the myelin. The resulting damage interferes with nerve impulses and can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, loss of vision, and a variety of other neurological impairments.
What does it mean to have an autoimmune disorder. Auto-Immune Disorders arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body. In other words, the body attacks its own cells.

    Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis
    • Numbness and weakness of limbs.
    • Extreme fatigue.
    • Eye trouble.
    • Loss of balance and co-ordination.
    • Loss of bladder-control and speech difficulties

A Lifestyle Change is a Must:
    · Begin by “cleaning” your Internal System.
    · Follow a juice and water fast/cleanse for 3-5 days. (Dr. Christopher has a good one, http://www.herballegacy.com/Three_Day_Cleanse.html )
    · After the cleanse, follow a diet that consists of Whole and Raw foods.
    · Raw fresh unsalted butter, homemade cottage cheese and soured milk and unfiltered honey are beneficial.
    · Cabbage, carrot, cucumber, radish, tomato and red beet, all fruits and berries and liquid whey have special value in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.
    · Any whole, live, raw foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and a small amount of fresh fish or chemical free chicken.
    · Avoid all refined flours, cereals, processed foods and meats, animal fats, and refined sugar.
    · Absolutely NO diet soda pop. Aspartame, in diet pop, can mimic MS symptoms.
    · Large doses of Vitamin B1, Vitamin B3, and Vitamin B6 and Vitamin F and Vitamin E can be used successfully.
    · Omega-3 fatty acids and Bromelain help with MS inflammation.
    · Avoid overwork and fatigue.
    · Massage the weakened muscles and set the joints through normal range of motion everyday.
    · Hot baths, hot mineral baths, cold showers in the morning and evening, swimming and exercises are other useful measures.

    Essential Oil helps:
      • Massage on Lower back on both sides of spine in a downward motion.
      • Using the same combination of oils, lightly massage the abdomen, starting just below the navel and massaging in a clockwise spiral out to the edge of the rib cage and the pelvis.
      • Massage bottoms of feet (arch area), palms of hands and upper part of the ears with same combination, undiluted.
    · 1-2 drops Frankincense on the temples, under the tongue, daily.
    · Also, rub 1-2 drops Helichrysum italicum at the base of the neck, daily.
        • Frankincense is the oil of choice because of its ability to cross the blood brain barrier. It has a powerful effect on neuromuscular issues and is an immune stimulant.
        • Helichrysum has the ability to reduce inflammation, while it soothes and calms. It increases the lymphatic drainage, and is the go to oil for nerve issues.
