How To Make an Herbal Infusion

Click for a larger view.

I make herbal infusions a lot. My favorite combination is lavender and rosemary but I make others too. I add herbal infusions to my facial toners, deodorants, insect sprays, and soap.

Natural Gifts - Make A Lavender & Rosemary Soap

I love homemade gifts and my daughter and I are having a blast making things for friends and family. This is one of my favorite soap recipe and it is so easy to make. You can make this soap without the shea butter as well. My husband uses this soap for shaving and I add rosemary essential oil instead of lavender for a more masculine aroma.

Soothing Lemon, Honey, Cinnamon & Cayenne Tea for Sore Throats

I woke up with a sore throat today so I decided to add cinnamon, honey, and cayenne to my regular lemon water. Lemon is great for the immune system and  cinnamon and honey are both antiviral and antibacterial. Cayenne's main constituent is called capsaicin.  It has also historically been used for pain, poor circulation, congestion, fever,  infections and colds just to mention a few uses. Let me tell you, this drink is so soothing to my throat. I feel so much better.
Some people say that the combination cinnamon/honey is the cure all for many diseases.

Soothing Tea
1 tsp of raw honey
1/4 tsp of cinnamon
1 lemon
some cayenne - I just sprinkled some
warm water

Put the honey in the bottom of a cup, mix the spices with the honey. Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and pour warm water in the cup last.   I have been drinking this a couple of times today already and I will have some more before bed time...

Alcohol Detox

Natural Help for Alcohol Detoxification

You must have a general understanding of what Alcohol is and what it does to the body, before you can learn how to detox it from your body's system and abstain from it.

Alcohol, or ethyl alcohol (ethanol), is an intoxicating ingredient found in wine, beer and hard liquor, and they each contain different amounts of alcohol or proof. Alcohol is produced naturally from carbohydrates when certain micro-organisms metabolize them in the absence of oxygen, called fermentation. Because of this fermentation, alcohol is considered an Acid, in the body, and alters the blood pH levels. Alcohol is considered a poison by your body, and all efforts are made to excrete it.

Alcohol is metabolized quickly by the body, requires no digestion (unlike food), and will be absorbed first, before most other nutrients. About 20 percent is absorbed directly across the walls of an empty stomach and can reach the brain within one minute. The remaining alcohol, in the stomach, begins to break down with the ADE or alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme (The ADE serves to break down alcohols that otherwise are toxic to the body) This process reduces the amount of alcohol entering the blood by approximately 20%. (Women produce less of this enzyme, which may help to partially explain why women become more intoxicated on less alcohol than men.). In addition, about 10% of the alcohol is expelled in the breath and urine.

The liver takes the biggest impact from alcohol. Alcohol travels to the liver via the veins and capillaries of the digestive tract, which affects nearly every liver cell. The liver cells are the only cells in our body that can produce enough of the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme to oxidize alcohol at an appreciable rate. As the liver metabolizes alcohol, by-products such as acetaldehyde are formed, some of which are more toxic to the body than alcohol itself. It is these that can eventually attack the liver and cause cirrhosis. Alcohol metabolism will permanently change the liver cell structure, which impairs the liver's ability to metabolize fats, causing fatty acids to accumulate.

Continuous Alcohol consumption affects the following:

  •   LIVER: Alcohol metabolized in the liver leads to acute and chronic liver disease, as well as a fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis.
  • REPRODUCTIVE: A drop in testosterone levels in men, and causes testicular shrinkage and impotence. In females, menstrual cycles can be disrupted and fertility is affected.
  • BRAIN: It can cause permanent damage to the connection between nerve cells. As it is a depressant, alcohol can trigger episodes of depression, anxiety and lethargy.
  •  HEART: Chronic high blood pressure and other heart irregularities.
  • BLOOD: It kills the oxygen-carrying red blood cells, which can lead to anemia. Raises blood pressure, blood lipids, elevates blood-glucose, and the risk of stroke and heart disease.
  • CANCER: Increases the risk of cancer in the liver, pancreas, rectum, breast, mouth, pharynx, larynx and esophagus.
  •  PANCREAS: Just a few weeks of heavy drinking can result in painful inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis. It results in a swollen abdominal area and can cause nausea and vomiting.
  • MALNUTRITION: Alcohol causes euphoria, which depresses appetite, so that heavy drinkers tend to eat poorly and become malnourished. The body also displaces the Alcohol calories (7 calories per gram) from needed nutrients.
  • CANDIDIASIS: An overgrowth of a bacteria naturally found in the intestine, candida, are fed and intensified by alcohol consumption. This bacteria can overpopulate and cause a host of problematic symptoms, including alcohol cravings.
  • ALCOHOL POISENING: Alcohol poisoning occurs when an excessive amount of alcohol is consumed in a short period of time. The symptoms are: Nausea and Vomiting, Irregular breathing, Mental slowness or stupor, Loss of Consciousness, Coma, Brain damage, or Death.
  • Click here to read more in depth about the effects of Alcohol on the Body.

Withdrawing from Alcohol, Step by Step;

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms usually occur within 5 - 10 hours after the last drink, but can occur days later. Symptoms get worse in 48 - 72 hours, and may persist for weeks, depending on the original frequency of alcohol consumption.

Some Symptoms include:
  • Anxiety, Nervousness, Depression, and Irritability
  • Fatigue or Insomnia, Loss of Appetite, Nausea, Headache, or Shakiness
  • Clammy skin, Sweating, Dehydration, or Rapid Heart rate

A severe form of alcohol withdrawal is called delirium tremens and may require Monitoring and Therapy.
Symptoms Include:
  •  Agitation
  • Severe confusion
  • Seeing or feeling things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Fever
  • Seizures

The above physical withdrawals are caused by stress on the body from the effects of alcohol. To reduce the stress and physically recover the biochemical balance of the body, a Diet change is a must.

  • Because alcohol causes elevated blood glucose, the body acclimates to the rapid rise and fall of blood sugar while drinking. The body wants to keep that pattern going to offset the Withdrawal Symptoms; hence the desire and tendency to drink more.
  • This condition is overlooked, yet it is CRITICAL to rehabilitation.

    1.  First week after your last Alcoholic Drink, consume Foods/Drinks that are high in energy and low in nutrition. (Yes, you read this correctly! But only while your body is withdrawing from the Alcohol)

    2.      Second week, begin incorporating High-Nutrient foods into your diet.
      •       HIGH-NUTRIENT foods. Begin with Berries. Start the day with a bowl of berries and allow them a couple of hours to digest. This continues the cycle of sugar imbalances, but Berries are a balanced and nutritious fruit with a moderate sugar content which will ease the body out of the sugar highs and lows. Throughout the day, include other fruit, green vegetables, eggs, nuts, meat, fish, and WATER, which all help conquer the cravings that result from the rapid rise and fall of Blood Sugar
    3.      Third week begin a Total Body Cleanse, by doing the following: http://www.theresanoilforthat.blogspot.com/search/label/Body%20Cleansing

    4.      Fourth week, Continue with following the Healthy Diet outline, while drinking plenty of water and incorporating the Herbal ideas below. Include Liver strengthening foods like Pineapple and Spinach. Good foods will help restore the balance and supply of essential nutrients that have been lost. Healthy Diet: http://www.theresanoilforthat.blogspot.com/search/label/Healthy%20Diet

    5.      For an Entire month after the last Alcoholic Drink, a Liver Cleanse is a must: http://www.theresanoilforthat.blogspot.com/search/label/Liver%20Cleanse

    Herbal Help for Alcohol Detox:

Herbal remedies help the healing process in two important ways: by healing fragile emotions, repairing physical damage, and helping to ameliorate side effects of withdrawal.

    Kudzu (Pueraria lobata)
Kudzu is a wild vine whose tubers contain a chemical compound called daidzin, which is used in modern herbal medicine to suppress alcoholic cravings and diminish the effects of alcohol withdrawal. Kudzu is known to treat headaches, increase the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme and aldehyde dehydrogenase, and increased superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, all of which can help clear alcohol from the system, as well as protect the liver from damage.

    ·         Daidzein and diadzin are the two compounds that need to be in the preparation. The only way you can guarantee you are getting enough of these compounds is to buy the dry root. Stay away from tinctures, as they are made using ethyl-alcohol.

    ·         The Chinese Pharmacopoeia states that an effective dose of dried kudzu root is 9-15g taken prior to drinking (1 hour minimum) if you are trying to cut down on your drinking. Take 10g, 3 times a day if you are abstaining from alcohol and during the Detoxification month.

    Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)
Milk thistle is one of the best known and respected herbs for protecting the liver. The silymarin contained in the milk thistle seeds acts to help the liver eliminate toxins, including alcohol. Silymarin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it may help the liver repair itself by growing new cells. Milk Thistle should be reserved for use after the Detoxification.

    ·         Dosage is 150-175mg, 2-3 times per day.

    ·         For preparation of Milk thistle tea, steep one half teaspoon of dried seeds in a cup of boiling water for 15 minutes. This should be used 3 times a day.

    ·         Can also take 1-2 ml of a Glycerin tincture, 3 times a day.

    ·         Commercial preparations of silymarin extract, with daily dosages of up to 550mg, may be useful.

    Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale)
This backyard weed has been used for hundreds of years to help liver problems and deficiencies, some of which are caused by alcohol. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, dandelion has shown benefits to reducing the severity of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
    ·         Dandelion may be consumed in a tea by combining 1 heaping Tablespoon dandelion to 1 Cup boiling water. Steeping over night is best. Or 2 to 8gms of dried root may be consumed three times a day.

    Chicory Root (Chichorium intybus)
Chicory has a long and well-documented history of assisting with liver problems. It is known to aid in purifying the liver and the blood. It aids in removing contaminants from the digestive system, allowing the liver to not work as hard to filter out toxins that may have escaped into the bloodstream.
    ·         Chicory Root may be consumed in a tea by combining 1 heaping Tablespoon Chicory to 1 Cup boiling water. Steeping over night is best.

    Goldenseal  (Hydrastis canadensis)
Goldenseal is effective in fighting alcohol sugar cravings because of its ability to kill the bacteria and candida, that overpopulate in the intestine and may be the cause of alcohol sugar cravings. Goldenseal's antiviral and antifungal properties are enhanced by the bitter taste, which can be a powerful deterrent in the fight against alcoholic cravings.
    ·         No more than 500mg per day should be taken. This should be taken from the beginning of abstaining from alcohol.

    Herbal Coffee
We offer an Herbal Coffee that has both Chicory Root and Dandelion Root.
Adding ¼ tsp. Milk Thistle Seeds per 1-2 Tablespoons of the Herbal Coffee, and drinking 1-2 Cups a day will be very beneficial. It could also replace regular Coffee, while Cleansing the body. http://www.theresanoilforthat.com/herbal-coffee.html

    Quit Smoking Naturally

Are there any oils that will help me quit smoking?
    Trevor, AZ

    Stop Smoking, Naturally!

Nicotine gets its name from the tobacco plant Nicotiana tabacum . It is present in many other plants, but Nicotiana tabacum is the main source of commercially cultivated and processed tobacco leaves that are used for making cigarettes. Nicotine is therefore a naturally occurring chemical compound (like morphine and opium which come from poppy seeds). Just like those chemicals, nicotine is very fast acting and it is one of the most addictive substances known to man.

Nicotine gets in the body through the inhalation of cigarette smoke. Once the smoke reaches the lungs, it is absorbed into the blood stream (as is oxygen) and distributed throughout the body. The body will see the nicotine as a toxic substance, and it will immediately begin to metabolized it through the kidneys, and then flush it through the liver to be sent out with the urine. This quick flushing rate often leads to heavy smoking, as smokers keep going for their next hit.

Through years of smoking, nicotine will end up in the fat cells and throughout the rest of the body. Once you quit smoking, the majority of the nicotine in your body should be metabolized and out of your system with in 48 to 72 hours. However, because nicotine sticks to your fat cells and other parts of your body, it can take longer to flush out entirely. Cotinine is a by-product of the burning of nicotine, and it can stay in your body up to 30 days. The amount of nicotine in each cigarette is approximately 1 to 2 mg.
    Symptoms of Nicotine/Smoking
After just one puff of a cigarette, the nicotine begins to act on the central nervous system, brain and other parts of the body, causing:
    • False Relaxation- Nicotine actually stimulates your system, even though it makes you feel relaxed. It produces an increased amount of a chemical, called dopamine, in the brain that when stimulated gives the feeling of pleasure, relaxation and reduced anxiety, but only for a moment. Once the dopamine levels drop, the nicotine addict may feel down or even depressed and lights up another cigarette to feel good again.

    • Heart Palpitations/Hypertension- A person who smokes puts an extra strain on their heart every time they have a cigarette. Cigarettes also contain carbon monoxide, which makes it more difficult for your body to get the oxygen it needs. To compensate, blood flow to the extremities is reduced.

    •  Suppressed Immune System- Nicotine affects the production of a type of white blood cell, which is produced in bone marrow and defends against infection and disease. Researchers found that nicotine-tainted cells were less able to seek and destroy bacteria than normal cells, and that nicotine suppresses an important cell function that helps kill invading bacteria. Thus causing a lowered resistance to colds and the flu.

    • Reduced body Senses- Smokers have bad breath, stained teeth and fingers. The nicotine addict's sense of smell and taste are less sensitive than a non-smoker's are, therefore they don't notice how they smell to others. The body is constantly trying to detox through the skin, which causes a bitter/pungent smell of a smokers body. Appetite is reduced as well.

    • Wrinkles- Nicotine addicts lose their hair and develop wrinkles at a younger age than non-smokers. Healthy skin perpetually regenerates. While old collagen is broken down and removed new collagen is produced. Researchers have found that smoke causes a marked reduction in the production of new collagen. A lack of new collagen results in the development of wrinkles.

    •  Reproductive problems- Men who smoke may have fertility problems, and women who use tobacco products are at increased risk of miscarriage, having a low birth weight baby, or going into labor early. Painful menstrual periods or an irregular cycle may be caused by smoking.

    • Cancer, Disease, and Death- About half of people who smoke will die as the result of their habit. Smoking causes cancer in several parts of the body, including the lungs, mouth, throat, and voice box. It also increases a person's chances of developing heart disease or having a stroke. Nicotine addiction has been linked to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which is emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

    Helping the Body

Within 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your body starts to change. Your pulse rate and blood pressure drop to normal levels. At the 3-day mark, your body will be nicotine free. At the 3-week mark, nicotine will no longer be controlling you. The following items will help you flush the nicotine through, and curb your cravings
Detox – A Liver Cleanse is a must to get out the toxins of both the nicotine and any medication. Read about Body Detoxing here: http://www.theresanoilforthat.blogspot.com/search/label/Body%20Detox

Vitamin C is the best known substance to remove Nicotine from the blood stream. This is because it not only helps increase your metabolism, but also creates White Blood cells, that help carry the poisons out of the body. Nicotine also tends to destroy vitamin C in your body, so replacing it will be important after you quit smoking. Go here to read about and purchase Vitamin C. http://www.theresanoilforthat.com/vitamin-c
Water- Nicotine is water soluble, so drinking water will help flush out any lingering traces.
Exercise- Help metabolize the nicotine by increasing your activity level. Any activity that speeds up your metabolism will help get nicotine and cotinine out of your body quicker.

Diet- Studies show that certain foods and drinks, such as meat and caffeinated beverages make cigarettes taste good. At the same time, dairy products and fresh vegetables make cigarettes taste worse
    ·         Avoid alcohol, sugar and coffee, which can trigger cravings for nicotine.
    ·         Drink Milk and Other Dairy Beverages. Milk  makes cigarettes taste very bitter and unpleasant. Some people recommend dipping cigarettes in milk, drying them out and then trying to smoke such cigarettes. The taste must be absolutely terrible, and every time such smoker will feel cravings again, he or she will remember that nasty taste of milky cigarettes.
    ·         Drink/Eat Vitamin C- For the same reason as above, Vitamin C intake is important. Smokers lose a lot of Vitamin C, and their body gets used to exchanging it with some unnatural elements it receives from nicotine. Eat oranges, lemons, black currants, pomegranates and other powerful natural sources of Vitamin C.
    ·         Vegetables- Eat celery, along with such vegetables as zucchinis, egg-plants, beans, and even cucumbers, which affect cigarette taste. Eating a lot of these vegetables can decrease nicotine dependence. Do not eat a lot of sweet vegetable, that are high in sugar, because excessive amounts of glucose activate the areas of the brain responsible for pleasure and satisfaction. Thus, glucose can stimulate cravings.
    ·         Broccoli- Broccoli helps to lower the risks of having lung diseases, including lung cancer. Broccoli contains sulforaphane, a substance which boosts the activity of NRF2 gene and protects lungs from any toxin-related damage. This will only help AFTER you have stopped smoking, because the nicotine kills the activity of sulforaphane.

    Helpful Essential oils

Eucalyptus radiata will help stop the cravings. It cleans out the receptor sites. Every 10-15 minutes, apply 1 drop on back of hand and lick it off. (Not tasty, but effective)

To get the lungs regenerated, apply 1 drop of Eucalyptus and 1 drop Peppermint on the chest (male) and on back for (female) . Then place a warm compress over the area until it cools.

Bergamot will also help stop the cravings of nicotine. Apply 1-2 drops on bottoms of feet several times a day.

Until your brain's dopamine chemicals level out on their own, use Frankincense for depression. Split 2-3 drops and place on the crown, back of neck, and tops of ears. (Always smell it. Frankincense will cross the blood brain barrier) Do this as often as necessary.

    Herbal Helps

Lobelia (lobelia inflata) The lobeline in Lobelia , commonly known as Indian tobacco, acts much like nicotine although it is less potent. This herb can help fool the body into thinking it has nicotine in the system. Lobelia will help with that OVERWHELMING urge to light up.
    ·         Tincture of Lobelia. (Found in most health food stores, though if you cannot find it locally, you can find it online or call 800.HerbDoc for Dr Schulze's.)
    ·         If worse comes to worse and you HAVE to have that cigarette, do this. Place one drop of lobelia tincture on your tongue, swish it around, and swallow. Now breathe through your mouth. You will FEEL like you just smoked a cigarette. Do this ONLY when you REALLY gotta have that smoke.
    ·         Another way to take lobelia is in a tea. Drinking a cup of lobelia tea makes you feel like you just had a smoke. At some health foods, this is sold as Smoker's Tea.
    ·         Lobelia can be toxic at relatively low doses and should not be used unless under the administration of a qualified health care practitioner.

Oat Straw (Avina sativa) The avenine glycosides in Oat Straw are of use in conditions where nervous weakness is a factor, and acts as a mild stimulator to the central nervous system, where avenine works to increase the peripheral blood flow in the body. These actions are helpful for those withdrawing from smoking addiction. Oat straw can be taken as a fluid extract or as a tea.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) Valerian can act as a calmative while undergoing withdrawal. When combined with lemon balm and St.John’s wort, this herb forms one third of a valuable antidepressant, and has shown value in reducing symptoms of anxiety and fear.

Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) Hyssop helps clean the mucus that has accumulated in the smoker’s lungs. In the first few days after quitting cigarettes, the body starts to reject the mucus that has been accumulating. The quitter might go through coughing bouts that bring up phlegm. Hyssop helps in separating it from the lungs and making it easier to cough it all out. It is recommended not to use any medication to dry up the mucus. Use Hyssop instead to get it out. Drink a a cup of Hyssop Tea once a day, until lungs are clear. Add Honey to sweeten.

    Summer Preparedness Tips

Are you ready for summer? Summer is just around the corner and it is a good idea to be prepared. I live in a place where it gets extremely hot and we are already experiencing temperatures in the high 90's. We have spiders, snakes, and scorpions to prepare for. It is about 25 miles to an emergency clinic, so it is important that I have things at home for emergencies.

    The Blend Purification
is one of my favorite oils during this time of the summer. I use it for wound care, to repel insects, purify the air, and to neutralize poisons from wasps, hornets, and other insects.

    Being prepared for the heat
One of the first things I do is to make sure we are prepared to handle the heat. We spend hours outdoors everyday and it gets very hot here, so I want to make sure we can handle the heat well. In the post Staying Cool in the Summer Heat, I share what we do to stay cool when it is hot.

Here are some other things that I do (cursive bold texts are linked to useful posts)

    First aid kit

    Bugs, bugs, and bugs
We have plenty of bugs where we live and I know we all deal with bugs. Some of us deal with more dangerous bugs than others, but they are still annoying whether they are poisonous or not.

I like to use the essential oils to ward off insects. I like to:
    •  make a room spray
    • make a massage blend
    • drop some oil on the collar of shirts
    • add to a diffuser
    • put on cotton balls and place around the house.
    •  to soak ribbons in water with added essential oils and hang them where you want them.
Some oils are more suitable as insect repellants than others, check out my insect post to know what oils to use.
    • It is not unusual that scorpions come inside our house so I make sure that I have suitable things for scorpion stings as well. My son was stung last year and it wasn't so bad, of course it helps that he is in good shape and that his immune system is strong.
    • When we lived in Texas we had a lot of ants coming into our house but we found a way to make the go away. Check out the post Ants in My Kitchen for some natural ways to repel ants.
    • Tick bites can lead to lyme disease and cause a lot of suffering. Use essential oils to remove and kill ticks.
    Sun exposure
    • I am not a big fan of sun screen since sun exposure is important so that the body can make vitamin D. I make sure that we protect ourselves by eating the proper nutrients and practice common sense when we are outside. I believe it is best to protect the skin from the inside out. I do realize that we may need sun screen if we are outside all day long, but I make sure that I use a sun screen that is safer.
    • I like to make a Summer, Sun and Bug Spray  that I can use for occasional sun burns as well as insect bites. It also works as an insect repellant.
    •  I also use things such as honey, lavender, aloe vera and calendula for sunburns. Check out my post, Tips for Sunburns to learn what to do if you spend too much time in the sun.
    • Also, it is important that you avoid phototoxic oils if you are going to be out in the sun. So, avoid these oils before sun exposure.
    Swimming pools
Most swimming pools are full of chemicals that are harmful. Many hours can be spent daily in the pool if you live in a hot climate. Chlorine and bromine are often used in pools and they are fighting for the same receptors as iodine in our body, this will influence our thyroid and set off a various reactions in the body. My husband and I discovered that our daughter is very sensitive so we supplement with things like black walnut or seaweeds during times when she spends a lot of time in a chlorinated pool. We used salt in our own little pool a few years ago, but unfortunately we are not in control of the pool we use today. It is far too hot not to go swimming, but we muscle test and she seems fine with extra nutritional support. Eating food high in antioxidants is always important to aid in neutralizing damaging free radicals.

    Equipment
This is the time when we use things that have not been used in a while. We don't have the long snowy winters here  so my children have used their bicycles all year long. We still look over the bicycles and make sure that break works and that the bikes are running fine. Helmets are inspected to make sure that they are still safe. Swim gear, life jackets, pool toys, and outdoor play areas are inspected to make sure they are still safe to use.

Other things to be prepared for
We experienced several fires not too far from us here in the the Sierra Foothills in California a few years ago. Fortunately the fires never reached our home, but it is scary enough when you hear that houses are destroyed only miles away from you.  It is important that we have an emergency preparedness plan for any kind of emergencies.

    Educating the children
I educate my children in how to deal with emergency situations. This includes what kind of remedies to use for various conditions, as well as what to do in case of fires or other emergencies. I write a list of situations that might happen and how to deal with them. My children also learn first aid and other useful information from Girls Camp and Boy Scouts.

Don't wait until you face an emergency. Stock up on the things that you need now.

    Before you leave:

I recommend that you always perform a skin patch test when you try a new essential oil.

Check out my safety page to make sure you are aware of any contrindications before you use essential oils. Some oils are not suitable when suffering from certain conditions. Also, Read this Before You Start Using Essential oils. Some oils should not be applied prior to sun exposure so make sure you check this list before spending time in the sun.

Not sure how to apply the oils? Visit these pages to learn how to apply the oils:

    Tips for Sunburns

We have had wonderful weather up here in the Sierra Foothills the last few day so we have spent many hours outside. I spent a little too much time sitting in the sun the other day. Fortunately, my daughter made an essential oil spray of lavender and calendula for the wound that she got from her bicycle crash the other day.  I felt a lot better after using my daughter's lavender spray. Below are some tips on what to do if you're sore after spending too much time in the sun.

A cooling bath for a sore skin
If the skin is very sore after a day in the sun you might want to pour a cooling bath and add some essential oils. Suitable carriers that historically been used for sunburns are honey, milk, aloe vera, honey and cream. Mix the essential oils with the carrier, and add to the bath water once its filled. The adult dose is 8-10 drops of essential oils to a full bath. I add half the amount to my 9 and 10 year old, so make sure to dilute it even more for smaller children.

Super Duper After Sun Healing Spray
    Distilled water 1/2 cup
    Witch hazel 1/4 cup

Other useful things to have at home in case the skin gets sunburned:

    Extra virgin olive oil
Extra virgin oil has traditionally been used to treat and heal burns for centuries. The cold pressed oil is high in vitamins and minerals.

    Calendula
Calendula is a staple in our house. I make infused oils and I always keep an bottle in the fridge. It can be used as a stand alone, or added to other blends, or mixed with essential oils can for extra healing. It is powerful on its own. I also use it as an ingredient when I make ointments, facial creams, or facial toners.

    Wheat germ oil
Is high in antioxidants and is useful for burns and damaged skin.

    Honey
Is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and can be used as a healing agent for dressings. Essential oils increase its effect, lavender and chamomile are especially useful.

    Peppermint tea
Is cooling and a good choice when it is hot and someone needs to cooled down.

    Spray bottles
Make a simple spray of Lavender  and use as a cooling and soothing spray.

We joke in our family and say that we eat our sunscreen:
    • We hydrate well
    • We eat extra antioxidants, especially beta carotene
    • We eat omega essential fatty acids.
    • We eat plenty of vegetables and some fruit to protect our skin as well.
    • Use essential oils for skin care. Essential oils have some of the highest ORAC values of all substances.
    • We make sure we get enough trace minerals, vitalized protein and vitamins in the summer heat. We add oxygen drops with electrolytes, enzymes, amino acids and trace minerals to our drinking water.
