Black Pepper Essential Oil

Black pepper is a common seasoning with tremendous benefits. So it's no surprise that black pepper essential oil has similar benefits. Let's learn more about this essential oil.

Quick Glance at Black Pepper Essential Oil

Pros: Black pepper essential oil can help with nicotine withdrawal, alertness and appetite.

Cons: This oil can irritate your skin.

Precautions: Black pepper oil is not recommended for pregnant women or persons with sensitive skin.

Properties of Black Pepper Essential Oil

Here are some properties of black pepper essential oil.

Name

The botanical name of black pepper is Piper nigrum. So look for this name when buying the essential oil.

Color & Scent

Black pepper essential oil may range from colorless to a greenish color. And, well, it's black pepper so the oil has a sharp, spicy, peppery smell.

Compounds

Over 54 compounds have been identified in black pepper oil. The most noteworthy ones include beta-caryophyllene (which makes up 22% of the oil), limonene (20%), alpha-pinene (15%), beta-pinene (13%), delta-3-carene (12%), beta-myrcene, and sabinene.

Black Pepper Essential Oil Benefits

The compounds in this oil are extremely beneficial. Here are just a few black pepper essential oil benefits.

1. Black pepper oil can help smokers quit
smoking icon

Two studies suggest black pepper can reduce withdrawals from smoking and cravings for nicotine.

In a 1994 study, cigarette smokers were asked to puff on devices that contained the vapor of black pepper essential oil.

The smokers said they felt a significant reduction in cigarette cravings and anxiety and an increase in chest sensations. The study therefore recommended black pepper oil to help smokers quit.

Another study (from 2013) asked regular nicotine users to inhale a drop of black pepper or angelica essential oils for two minutes whenever they began craving nicotine. For both oils, the participants reported reduced cravings and a longer delay time before their next tobacco use.

So consider inhaling black pepper essential oil instead of smoking! It may help you to quit once and for all.

2. Black pepper oil makes you alert
alertness icon

A 2002 study measured the sympathetic activity of young, healthy women after inhaling black pepper oil. Now, you may know, your sympathetic activity is responsible for your fight or flight response. So, after breathing in black pepper, the women were more alert and actually had more adrenaline in their blood.

The researchers went on to identify limonene and pinene as the compounds responsible for this benefit of black pepper essential oil.

So use black pepper oil to boost your alertness, focus, and concentration.

3. It is antioxidant

Free radicals are harmful compounds that can damage your skin and the DNA of your cells. That means they can cause sagging, wrinkles and even cancer!

Antioxidants scavenge or neutralize free radicals and convert them into less harmful compounds. And black pepper essential oil has antioxidant effects. In fact, a 2009 study showed black pepper oil had relatively strong antixodant and free radical scavenging capabilities.

4. It may stimulate appetite
stomach icon

A 2006 study showed that inhaling black pepper essential oil caused stroke patients to swallow more often. This reflex swallowing did not depend on the level of consciousness, physical or mental status of the patients involved.

As such, many researchers believe black pepper essential oil does have a stimulating effect on swallowing which can translate to increased appetite.

5. Black pepper is antibacterial

A 2000 study tested six essential oils including black pepper, oregano and thyme on 25 different bacteria. These bacteria included animal and plant pathogens, food poisoning and food spoilage bacteria.

The results showed all essential oils inhibited every bacteria tested.

6. It is anti-fungal

Not only is black pepper essential oil antibacterial, it is also anti-fungal. And a 2004 study proved these effects.

7. Black pepper kills insects
insecticide icon

There are several studies demonstrating black pepper's effectiveness against insects. One study done in 2007 showed that just a little black pepper oil (0.2% concentration) was sufficient to repel red flour beetles.

The study went on to prove vapors of black pepper essential oil were able to kill the larvae and adult beetles and inhibit development.

Summary: Here's a little summary of the black pepper essential oil benefits we've seen:

Black Pepper Essential Oil Uses

Aren't the black pepper essential oil benefits amazing? Now here are some uses for black essential oil.

Inhaling

You can simply add 1-2 drops of black pepper oil to your diffuser for a strong spicy smell.

It also blends well with other strong spicy oils like bergamot, clary sage, clove, ginger, sandalwood, and ylang ylang.

Besides these, you can follow the experiment for nicotine withdrawals. Add 1-2 drops of black pepper oil to a tissue and inhale for two minutes whenever you feel nicotine cravings.

Massaging

Like all essential oils, always do a skin patch test to make sure you are not allergic to black pepper essential oil. Black pepper oil can cause irritation to sensitive skin so this patch test is extremely important.

If you are not allergic or sensitive, add 1-2 drops of the oil to any carrier oil before using on your skin.

More Precautions

This oil is a known skin sensitizer so it is important to check with your doctor before using it especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The Kindle Diet

I bumped into a colleague, Deb, at work the other morning and did a double take.  I couldn’t believe how different she looked.  After a brief chat, she proudly exclaimed that she was on "The Kindle Diet.”  Of course, I interrogated her about it, with the intention of warning her if it turned out to be another unhealthy, fad diet.

It wasn’t.

My clever colleague had turned a passion of hers, reading short novels, into a healthy weight loss trick.  If Deb keeps her food intake under 2,000 calories daily, 300 calories less than she needs to maintain her weight, she rewards herself by downloading a low cost ($4 bucks or less)  Kindle book for every day she meets her goal.  She doesn’t meet her goal every day, but if she has a good week, she stockpiles the books for the weekend.  She started this routine in January and has lost almost 13 pounds.

“It’s the only diet I’ve successfully been on longer than 2 weeks. I think the key is the slow change toward getting competent at gauging the calorie cost of food before I eat it, and always asking myself if it is worth the tradeoff,” claims Deb.   “It’s easy to sacrifice my health for a lunchtime dessert,  but for me,  it’s much more serious if I’m sacrificing a new Kindle book.”   With the nice weather, Deb has also begun downloading audiobooks and “walking and reading.”

Unbeknownst to Deb, research has documented that providing incentives can help individuals lose weight, and most importantly, keep the weight off.   In a study of over 260 overweight individuals published in the journal, Obesity, modest financial incentives motivated greater weight loss over a 15-month period among individuals on the “incentive program” as compared to those not given an incentive.

“My next goal is to not only reward myself for sticking to my diet but for also burning 300 calories exercising daily,” says Deb.  Personally, I can’t wait to see what she looks like during the summer.

Have you ever used incentives to help you lose weight?  If so, what did you use and how much did you lose?

Be well, Joan

Beauty Within: How Your Diet Can Be Anti-Aging

You are what you eat, and what you eat may also affect how old you look.  A poor diet may not only be bad for your hips and heart but also your face.
The anti-aging skin care market is a lucrative one with Americans spending over $2 million on anti-aging creams, lotions, and moisturizers.   (I personally fund a large percentage of this market.)

Ongoing research is shedding light on how certain compounds in foods can be anti-aging.  In addition to applying sunscreen to block aging ultraviolet rays from the sun, eating right can help reduce the oxidative stress and inflammation in your body that ages you before your time.   Oxidative stress is an anti-beauty invader in the body, causing damage to cell membranes, your DNA, and elastin and collagen, two proteins that give your skin elasticity and structure.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a diet rich in antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, lycopene, green tea, beta carotene and cocoa flavanols has been shown to offer some protection from the aging factors caused by ultraviolet light.  Antioxidants help protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by sun exposure.

"Diets high in antioxidants and rich in whole grains and  good fats, such as linoleic acid, and lower in refined carbohydrates and added sugars have been shown to be associated with a better skin-aging appearance," claims Patricia Farris, MD, a dermatologist and clinical assistant professor at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Here is a list of foods to add to your diet in the fight against aging:

Here’s to a better diet and younger looking you.

Peace and Calming Essential Oil DIY Recipe - Great for Calming Children, Anxiety, Teeth Grinding

Being the mother of a 4 year old and almost 1 year old and working full time can be crazy sometimes. Everyone warns you of the terrible 2's or the terrible 3's. Those days weren't as bad for us. I think it's finally hit for us as the terrible 4's. Being a 4 year old is tough. Trying to become more independent and establishing her role in the family as the oldest and now a big sister and I think there's a little jealousy setting in. All this has been hard on my daughter. She is a very strong willed and an independent little girl which is great. I admire that about her so much and am very proud of her. But lately the defiance and talking back and tantrums has really frazzled me.

I've talked with a few of my girlfriends for advice, I even went to the library to read up on dealing with her current behavior. Then I thought...... let's try some oils and Peace & Calming came to mind! We're going to give this a try and see if it helps to tame her tantrums and defiance. She also grinds her teeth at night so we can kill 2 birds with 1 stone!

Peace & Calming is a blend of Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Tangerine and Blue Tansy essential oils. It has such a unique smell that sets it apart and when diffused, it will bring peace to whatever room it was diffused in.

Whether it's applied directly to the body or diffused into the air, Peace & Calming Essential Oil is expressly designed to calm tension of all kinds. It brings peace and harmony to all those who enjoy it.

Uses for Peace & Calming
Ease Tension and Anxiety
Halt Teeth Grinding
Promotes Deep Sleep
Calm fussy and/or rowdy children

    1. Have a relaxing Bath

Mix 4-6 drops of Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend with 1/2 cup epsom salts, then place directly into a warm bath for relaxing experience.

    2. Halt Teeth Grinding

Diffusing Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend while you sleep calms your body and can halt teeth grinding.

    3. Improve General Sleep

In addition to stopping teeth grinding, Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend can also help anyone for better quality sleep. Instead of diffusing the oil, rub 1-2 drops on your shoulders and on the bottoms of your feet to encourage good sleep.

    4. Calm Children

Diffuse Peace & Calming in the air in an area of high traffic or wherever you spend the most time. Diffuse when the kids get home from school or after a rowdy day playing with friends. You can also apply a few drops mixed with a carrier oil and apply to the child's forearms or bottoms of feet.

    5. Enjoy a Calming Massage

Peace & Calming Essential Oil blend, mixed with a carrier oil, allows your muscles to relax easily and helps the massage itself be more effective.

****DIY Peace & Calming Essential Oil Blend****
    30 Drops Tangerine
    30 Drops Orange
    20 Drops Ylang Ylang
    10 Drops Patchouli
    4 drops Blue Tansy

*My oil company does not carry Blue Tansy so I've replaced it with German Chamomile

Tangerine - Contains ester and aldehydes that are calming. Rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene it also helps to release stress and occasional nervous irritability.

Orange - Is rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene and aids in maintaining normal cellular regeneration. Also has calming effects and may be used for feelings of peace.

Ylang Ylang - Has a long history in skin and hair care products, particularly in Asia, where is is used to promote luxuriant hair. It also restores confidence and equilibrium.

Patchouli - Has a sweet and rich aroma that is very beneficial for the skin. Use to reduce wrinkled or chapped appearance. Patchouli is a general tonic that supports the digestive system and soothes occasional queasiness.

Blue Tansy - Has a slightly sweet and herbaceous aroma. Tansy plants have several species and this one is also called Moroccan Chamomile or Annual Tansy. Emotionally, it combats anger and negative emotions.

*German Chamomile - Has a sweet and grassy aroma. It is very calming and relaxing. It is known to dispel the emotions of anger and rage and promote peace and patience.

    Hey Dude. Can You Cook?

Shelley, is a 32 year old single, doctoral student and admits that the way to her heart is through her stomach.  A perfect date for Shelley is not a fancy meal in an expensive restaurant, but rather it is when he cooks dinner for her.  “Creating a dinner takes a lot of work so it shows kindness, thoughtfulness, and advance planning.  It easy to make a restaurant reservation, but cooking a meal screams out intimacy to me, “claims Shelley.  “If a guy made me dinner, especially earlier on in our relationship, I would be significantly more likely to go out with him again.”

Enter Dan Churchill, a cook, contestant on MasterChef Australia, and the author of Dude Food: A Guy’s Guide to Cooking Kick-Ass Food.   Churchill wrote this cookbook after continually getting requests from his guy friends to share his recipes.  “My mates began realizing how much their girlfriends and mums love the fact that I can cook.   They wanted to learn how to cook so that they could impress them,” claims Churchill.    “It is required reading for guys who always wanted to cook but don’t know where to start.”

Churchill’s goal for the book is to educate, motivate, and inspire an intimidated male audience who often don’t know the difference between a fry pan and sauce pan.  The cookbook contains simple, healthy, and delicious recipes as well as simple kitchen tips and tricks that teach men how to stock their pantry and easily whip together a dinner for themselves and others.   The recipes have a short list of identifiable ingredients that even a novice cook would understand.

    Churchill cooking with his mates.
Interestingly, it appears that more men are getting out of their home male caves and venturing into the kitchen.  According to a study in Nutrition Journal, the proportion of U.S. males who are now regularly cooking increased almost 30 percent since the 1960’s.  During the same time, the number of women doing the cooking declined by about the same percentage.

Churchill will be at Northeastern University on April 27 for a free cooking demonstration.  I may mosey on over there on that day to get a copy of the cookbook for my single son living in New York City and dating a lovely woman.  It can’t hurt.

Are you a male who likes to cook?  Ladies, do you enjoy having a meal cooked for you?  Please comment.

    Be well, Joan
